WHAT IS THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF BACKYARD STEM?

The overall goal of Backyard STEM is allow students to see the important role of STEM in their everyday lives, while developing the 4C’s: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. While most parents may have not had a STEM curriculum when they were in elementary school, now is the time to get children excited about the endless possibiliities in the world of STEM!

WHERE ARE THE SESSIONS HELD?

The whole idea behind Backyard STEM Class is to offer participants the opportunity to engage in STEM activities in the comfort of their own home- preferably in the backyard. Most sessions will can take place outside, unless the weather is uncooperative. The benefit of such a program is that parents don’t need to drive their child to a camp and deal with the hassle of traffic and parking.

WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO SUPPLY?

For the most part, nothing!  In cases where either an iPad or laptop is needed, such as for podcasting or video editing sessions, having the availability of a device would required.

HOW LONG IS EACH SESSION?

Each session is 60 minutes in length, and can be either planned over a sequence of five consecutive days or five weeks throughout the summer.  The dates are usually very flexible, depending on travel plans.
